This ring was made in the early 19th century, likely in Italy. I found it on a sourcing trip in Rome. It's crafted from 18k yellow gold and sterling silver, with approximately ~1.1 carats total weight in old mine cut diamonds. The center stone is an unusual lozenge shape. The stones have some chips and nicks commensurate with the age of the ring.
I believe it was altered later in the 19th century—I think the shank might be a replacement, and I think around the same time somebody decided to open up the backs of the diamond settings. It used to be closed, with foil behind the diamonds, and you can still see little traces of foil at the edges of the settings.
Because it’s open back now, you can get it wet safely. I tightened all the diamonds in their settings, but it is still delicate and should be worn with care.
6.25 and slightly sizable.
